The International Journal of Research and Development in Engineering Sciences (IJRDES) e-ISSN: 2852 - 4201 is multidisciplinary double-blind Peer-Reviewed Research Open Access Journal is committed to the principles of Open Access (OA), ensuring that all published content is freely available to readers worldwide without subscription or access fees. Open Access promotes the unrestricted dissemination of scholarly knowledge, allowing researchers, educators, policymakers, and the general public to read, download, copy, distribute, and use the content for lawful purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original authors. By removing financial and legal barriers to access, Open Access supports greater visibility, usage, and citation of research, and fosters international collaboration across disciplines. All articles published under the Open Access model are typically licensed under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY-NC-SA), which clearly defines how the content may be reused. Authors retain the copyright to their work while granting the journal the right to publish and distribute the article. Open Access publishing may involve an Article Processing Charge (APC), which covers the cost of editorial handling, peer review, production, and digital archiving. However, the journal may offer waivers or discounts in specific cases, such as for authors from low-income countries or for invited submissions. By adopting an Open Access policy, IJRDES aligns with global efforts to make scientific knowledge universally accessible, transparent, and equitable.

Open Access (OA) refers to a scholarly publishing model that provides immediate, free, and unrestricted online access to research articles. Unlike traditional subscription-based systems, Open Access allows anyone—researchers, students, professionals, and the public to read, download, share, and use published research without financial or legal barriers. The main goal of Open Access is to maximize the visibility, accessibility, and impact of scholarly work, especially in a global research environment where equitable access to knowledge is essential. Open Access aligns with the principles of transparency, collaboration, and knowledge dissemination. It empowers researchers in developing countries who may not have access to expensive journal subscriptions, supports faster innovation, and increases citation rates for authors. OA also complies with mandates from funding agencies and academic institutions that require research outputs to be openly accessible.

Open Access (OA) in conference publishing ensures that all research papers presented at a conference and published in its proceedings are freely available to anyone, anywhere, immediately upon publication. This model eliminates paywalls and subscription barriers, allowing global access to cutting-edge research and fostering academic collaboration and visibility. It is particularly valuable in fast-moving fields like computer science, engineering, and biomedical research, where timely dissemination of findings is critical. By adopting an Open Access model, conferences increase the visibility and citation potential of accepted papers, support compliance with institutional or funder mandates, and promote knowledge equity across geographic and economic boundaries.

Benefits of Open Access for Conference Publications

  • Increases global reach and visibility of research.
  • Enhances citations and academic impact.
  • Ensures compliance with funding agency mandates (e.g., Horizon Europe, NIH, DST, SERB, ANRF, etc).
  • Encourages knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Promotes equity by allowing access without financial or institutional restrictions.

Types of Open Access

There are several models of Open Access, each offering different levels of accessibility and copyright management

  • Gold Open Access :  The final published version of the article is made freely available immediately upon publication. Usually requires authors to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to cover editorial and publication costs. Articles are published under a Creative Commons license (e.g., CC BY), which allows for reuse with proper attribution.
  • Green Open Access (Self-Archiving) :  Authors are allowed to deposit a version of their manuscript (often the preprint or postprint) in an institutional or subject repository. Access may be immediate or delayed, depending on the publisher’s embargo policy. No cost to the author, but the journal may still be subscription-based.
  • Hybrid Open Access : Traditional subscription journals offer authors the option to make individual articles Open Access for a fee (APC). Readers may need a subscription to access other content in the same journal.
  • Diamond or Platinum Open Access: Articles are published Open Access with No APCs charged to authors or readers. Funded by institutions, societies, or governments, and often run by non-profit organizations.
  • Bronze Open Access :  Articles are free to read on the publisher’s site but lack a clear license for reuse. Often offered temporarily or at the publisher’s discretion.
